The Quality Manual, when integrated into a laboratory's operation, can be an effective and practical roadmap to guide management in assuring compliance, charting a course of continuous improvement, increasing efficiency and providing service to clients. A Quality Manual is a requirement of the NELAC, TNI and 17025 Standards, but successful labs take this requirement and turn it into a way of monitoring operations and improving Quality. This takes thought, planning and yes, work, but the long term returns can be in decreased operating costs, better service to clients and less efforts spent on management.
This 2-hour interactive webinar focuses on the Standards provisions and on ways that management can choose to use the Quality Manual as a burden or asset. Ways the document can be written to support the labs operations, integrate the quality management techniques into the labs every day duties and tasks and techniques to promote efficient management will be explored. One of the biggest choices centers on what needs to go into the Quality Manual or what should be an SOP or even needs addressed at all. How much detail is needed? Why do my lab need a quality manual when what I have the Standard? All of these will be explored. Additional tools for preparing or updating a Quality Manual will be discussed.
One of these tools is the TNI Quality Manual Template which is designed for laboratories to help prepare a Quality Manual in compliance with the 2009 TNI Standard. The prefabricated sections of the Quality Manual follow the ISO 17025 outline, but are completely fluid so that you can put sections, examples, links or references anywhere. The template includes helpful notes, examples and text that can be edited to match each laboratory's particular circumstances. The webinar will review how this template works and emphasis that each lab has its unique procedures that should be described within their manual.
This workshop is intended to be interactive. The presenters will focus on reviewing the Standard and on practical measures and questions that management needs to answer when developing or updating the documents. Tips on practical implementation techniques will also be discussed. Questions are encouraged and welcome. Several options for participants to provide feedback, including their own experiences, solutions and frustrations will be provided. A follow up conference call for participants is being considered to further assist participants and answer questions.

Jack Farrell has 34 years of experience in the environmental industry as an analyst, QA professional, technical and general manager of small, medium and large commercial laboratories. He is an experienced environmental manager, laboratory chemist, trainer, and auditor. Mr. Farrell holds degrees in Biological Sciences (Microbiology) and Chemistry and is a professional trainer, consultant and third party assessor for a number of state and federal regulators. Jack Farrell is a Senior Environmental Analyst, President and Founder of Analytical Excellence, Inc. (AEX). Since its inception in 1993, AEX has been an independent strictly confidential consulting firm specializing in environmental laboratory operations, analysis and matters concerning the generation of analytical data to support effective compliance decision-making and aspects of litigation. AEX's clientele consist of well-known small and large laboratory companies, instrument manufacturers, engineering firms, state and federal regulatory agencies and legal practice firms.
Ilona Tauton has more than 20 years of experience working as a bench chemist and in developing and implementing compliance programs to meet FIFRA and TSCA GLPs, ISO 9000 and ISO 17025 requirements. She helped establish the largest environmental testing laboratory network in the country. Ms. Taunton's current focus is on developing national accreditation programs for stationary lab and field sampling and measurement organizations. She serves as a Program Administrator for The NELAC Institute. |
